We have an old broken car which will be going to the scrapyard soon but first we are using it for some lessons. Recently we set off an airbag so I could learn about them (https://abisadventures.blog/2025/06/06/learning-about-air-bags/).
This weekend my cousin Max came to visit, he is 20 and has been driving a car for two years now. We decided to try out some life hammers. These are a small tool which can be used after a car crash to cut your seatbelt and smash the car window so you can climb out of the car.
First we tried to smash one of the car windows by kicking it with our feet but it really wouldn’t break. Daddy then told us that in most cars you can remove the headrest and use the pointed end to smash the window. Mummy tried and smashed the window first time.
Max and I then learnt about safety glass which is used in cars. When the glass breaks it forms small balls rather than shattering into splinters. This makes it much safer to touch and potentially crawl over.
Next mummy and Max then strapped themselves into the front seats and Daddy put a really big chain around the car. He attached the end of the chain to the back of his 4×4 and very slowly started to pull the car over. Once the car was on it’s roof and mummy and Max were hanging upside down the tried to cut their seatbelts with the life hammer. Max was able to cut his but mummy wasn’t able to so Max cut hers for her.
