We took a trip on a narrowboat across the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I made friends with the tour guide and she asked me to give out the leaflets to all the people on board the boat. To thank me for helping she gave me a packet of polos.

Things Learnt:

• an aqueduct is a bridge that contains water
• a viaduct is a bridge for trains or vehicles
• the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is 38m above the River Dee
• Pontcysyllte’ pronounced Pont – ker – sulth – tay, is the Welsh name for ‘the bridge that connects’
• it is the longest aqueduct in Britain
• it is the highest canal aqueduct in the world
•  it was designed by Victorian engineers, Thomas Telford and William Jessop, and built between 1793 and 1808.
• The Llangollen Canal was used to transport coal, slate, limestone and iron. 
• A narrowboat (or barge) are special boats that go on canals. Some people live in narrowboats.
• Canals are manmade, unlike rivers which were created by nature. They were used many years ago to move things around the country. The first narrowboats were pulled by horses which walked along the tow path next to the canal.
