Ballooning Moths

We came across a wildlife wonder today on our morning walk in Cardiff. We saw hundreds of Winter Moth Caterpillars all hanging on threads dangling from a Siberian Elm tree.

We found out from Google that this is called Ballooning and it’s a method the newly hatched caterpillars use to travel to a different tree.

There were countless strings of moths swinging around in the wind, it was impossible to walk under the tree without getting them caught on you.
