Making paper

Today I went to a free event at ETO, the recycling centre just outside Carmarthen. There were running an event that showed us how to make recycled paper out of shredded cardboard.

First we broke up lots of shredded newspaper and dissolved it in water.

Then we scooped the cardboard slush into a food mixer and made it into a lumpy runny paste.

We scoped two handfuls into a piece of cloth and squeezed as much water out as we could.

We then returned it to a clean tray of water and mixed it all up again.

After this we scooped some into wooden frames that had a mesh base and gentled pressed a sponge onto the mixture to get the excess water out.

The final step was to carefully tip the sheet of paper out to dry. To make the paper white, it would then be bleached but we didn’t do this step.

After this we were given a sheet of paper with different patterned Easter eggs and we had to wander around the recycling village and find each egg, which revealed a letter. Once we’d found all the letters it spelt the word RECYCLING. Everyone who got the word was allowed to choose a free nook from the shop. I choose a dinosaur sticker book.

The final activity was painting several Easter shaped bits of wood.
